Discover what our Belfast Green Team accomplished in their first year of working together to advance Ciena’s sustainability in the office.
Across Ciena our team members are empowered to pursue their passions, within their roles and beyond. For many, a passion for the environment inspires team members to find ways to advance sustainability however they can while at work. In 2023, we set science-based greenhouse gas reduction targets to guide us in our sustainability journey. Reaching these goals is a team effort and requires the support of our people all over the globe.
One team who have brought their personal passions to their work is our team in Belfast. Here, a group of team members took the initiative to form a Green Team who could do their part to make an impact towards our goals. This team works together to implement simple changes with big impact, and in their first year, these changes have resulted in some impressive wins. Some of their achievements include:
- Updating the paper used in the office to paper made with 50 – 100% recycled content
- Replacing all single-use stirrers, utensils, and plates with reusable items
- Setting timers on TV screens to turn off when not in use
- Fitting aerators on the water faucets in the kitchen and bathrooms to help reduce water use
- Posting signage throughout the office to remind others to turn off the lights and air conditioning when not in use and to recycle waste
With these initiatives, the team is working to help the office reduce energy and water use and divert more waste from landfills, all of which have an impact on our company-wide environmental goals. In fact, their efforts are already making an impact. Our most recent data shows that the water use per person in our Belfast office has decreased by approximately 32% from the previous year.
In addition to making these strides within the office, the Belfast Green Team has also gone into the community to volunteer with local environmental organizations. As part of their community engagement, they have planted trees and cleaned litter from a local beach, with plans to continue celebrating occasions like Earth Month and International Day for Biodiversity with volunteering events every year.
