Ciena’s Stan Hawthorne explains why hidden optical issues can quietly undermine capacity, resilience, and customer confidence—and how to act before they do. This is the second in a series of three thought leadership blogs exploring network optimization. Read the first blog here.
Some of the most impactful network problems do not start as outages. They start quietly —as fiber degradation, margin loss, fragmented spectrum, or service visibility gaps that build over time until they constrain capacity, weaken resilience, increase costs, or affect the customer experience.
AI-scale demand, tighter service expectations, and pressure to maximize infrastructure ROI are making these hidden issues harder to ignore. The good news is that the network often already contains the signals needed to identify them. The challenge is turning those signals into action.
Recap: Discover, analyze, automate
In the first blog of this series, we shared our network optimization mantra of “discover, analyze, and automate,” focusing on discover: using a network audit to understand the true state of the network. Now, let’s explore how analyze helps you predict, visualize, and optimize network performance. We’ll cover automate in the next blog.

Our Optimization Service’s “analyze” capabilities are designed to help customers predict, visualize, and optimize their network’s performance. We’ll discuss four capabilities in this blog to bring visibility to hidden issues hindering performance and growth:

Let’s take a closer look at each of these network analysis capabilities.
Predictive span failure identification: Catching span impairment before it becomes an outage
Fiber degradation is inevitable. Aging, repairs, splicing, and other factors gradually alter span behavior, often beyond what operators or fiber providers can proactively address. When span health declines unnoticed, the consequences can include service disruption, SLA exposure, lost revenue, and damaged customer relationships. Ciena’s approach leverages proprietary software, which rapidly analyzes hundreds of spans, comparing current behavior with baseline performance. We use metrics such as fiber loss, optical return loss, and transmit amplifier power to identify, localize, and prioritize the spans most at risk.
Historical lookback and daily reporting help teams distinguish what needs immediate action from what can wait. We also correlate different signal degradations affecting channel performance, providing a clear, quick visualization of their traffic impact. Further, through our companion Managed Services, Ciena can also coordinate directly with your fiber provider on your behalf, reducing your operational burden while improving responsiveness.
Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) tuning: Mining latent system margin to drive more capacity
A second hidden issue is margin loss. As SNR deviations grow, it becomes harder for the system to separate signal from noise, increasing the risk of channel degradation, control plane protection loss, failed channel adds, and avoidable capacity constraints. Built-in controls can compensate for moderate deviation, but once attenuation reaches a certain level, direct intervention is needed. Ciena remotely redefines amplifier settings—peak power, gain, and tilt—to restore margin to design specifications without truck rolls or new equipment. That matters because it turns a potentially slow, expensive remediation process into a rapid, remote, and highly cost-effective performance recovery motion. And through restoring capacity in the network you already own, you extend its usable life, thereby maximizing ROI.
Spectrum defragmentation: A faster path to capacity
Another challenge you likely feel acutely: demand is growing faster than available capacity—often much faster. AI workloads and other high-bandwidth services are intensifying the need for additional spectrum, yet traditional expansion through new fiber (if you can get it,) new equipment, and facility upgrades can take a year or more and require significant capital. Fortunately, in many cases, the capacity is already there in principle—it is simply stranded because the spectrum has become fragmented.
By analyzing deployed routes and reconfiguring and recoloring wavelength assignments, our Services experts can create contiguous spectrum for new connections and recover meaningful capacity in the existing network, typically within 60 days. That gives you breathing room to launch services sooner, bridge capacity needs while larger builds are underway, or defer expansion until business conditions make it more attractive. As with SNR tuning, “defrag” is an ROI play, extending the usable life of the network you already own.

SLA performance monitoring: From SLA adherence to customer confidence
In high-touch customer service environments, meeting your SLA commitments is only part of the equation. There is often a gap between how your services perform and your customer’s actual experience. Your customers need a clear, credible way to monitor their own performance. Without a shared source of truth, even well-performing service delivery can give rise to confusion, finger-pointing, strained relationships, and financial penalties. Our cloud-based, white-label SLA portal gives you a customizable solution for your customers’ use. With intuitive dashboards and dynamic reporting, it enables end customers to monitor your SLA adherence and key performance metrics directly. The result is greater transparency across the service chain, stronger trust, fewer disputes, reduced penalty exposure, and more value from the services you deliver.

These “analyze” capabilities of our Optimization Service work together or separately to help you uncover hidden issues, reduce risk, restore performance, and keep your services moving. When you’re balancing growth, customer experience, and infrastructure economics, you need more than troubleshooting. You need deep insights and expertise to help your network perform at its best every day—more resilient, more efficient, and better prepared to support what comes next.
The issues you can’t see often create the biggest risks—and the biggest opportunities. Reach out to your Ciena account team to explore how Optimization Service can help you unlock more from the network you already have.
