Ciena 5164
Updated: May 12, 2026

The 5164 Router is designed with the network operator in mind, offering a seamless way to aggregate and transport data across a converged and simplified network infrastructure. With high-density 1/10/25GbE to 100/200GbE aggregation and features like hard network slicing (FlexE) and soft network slicing (segment routing [SR]), the 5164 empowers your business to optimize connectivity, effortlessly scale, and simplify operations—key to building networks for AI, cloud, 5G and whatever comes next.

This high-performance, power-redundant router is capable of delivering 800 Gb/s. Designed as a compact, power-efficient 1 RU access and aggregation device, the 5164 features 32 ports of 1/10/25 GbE, all of which support eCPRI along with four fixed 100/200 GbE ports. These ports also support a variety of pluggable modules, including the coherent WaveLogic 5 Nano (WL5n) optics and XGS-PON micro OLT (uOLT) transceiver. This flexibility makes the 5164 a versatile solution for 5G, backhaul, mobile transport, and enterprise applications—all on a unified infrastructure.

The 5164 boasts an advanced feature set, including a coherent muxponder that consolidates distributed fiber into optical nodes, extends the reach between hubs and nodes, and optimizes fiber utilization. It also harnesses 100G coherent optics to deliver MEF-certified Ethernet business services. In remote OLT (rOLT) deployments, the 5164 equipped with XGS-PON uOLT enables service providers to deliver XGS-PON services for both residential and business customers.

Features and benefits

  • Temperature hardened (-40°C to +65°C) for temperature-challenged or space-constrained locations
  • 32 x 1/10/25GbE and 4 x 100/200GbE fixed ports

Product overview

The 5164 is a high-performance, rugged router designed to meet the demands of enterprise routing and 5G network convergence, supporting fronthaul, midhaul, and backhaul (xHaul) applications. Engineered for reliability, the 5164 is temperature hardened to perform in even the most challenging enterprise environments.

Coherent capability

As part of Ciena’s coherent optical solutions, the 5164 supports 100G/200G coherent optics. Additional optical transceiver options include 25G/10G/1G grey optics, tunable 80 km SFP+, and XGS-PON uOLT.

Applications

With increased choice and flexibility, you can extend the reach for 25/10/1GbE services anywhere—from coherent optics in the harshest environments to more broadband, mobile, and business customer locations.

  • Coherent muxponder extends the reach between hubs and optical nodes, reducing fiber and building requirements, leading to significant cost savings
  • Remote-PHY device (RPD) backhaul transports DOCSIS downstream, upstream, and video traffic between distributed RPD nodes and the CCAP core over Ethernet/IP fiber links
  • Metro Ethernet, deployed as a compact 1 RU, environmentally hardened shelf within the outside plant, delivers MEF-certified Ethernet business services
  • uOLT support offers a flexible and scalable approach to deliver XGS-PON connectivity to remote users, including residences and businesses
  • Mobile transport delivers Ethernet backhaul for cost-effective and efficient mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) services
  • IP networking provides flexible EVPN, Layer 2 (L2), and Layer 3 (L3) services, and various underlay transport and stitching options, such as SR and others

Software-defined networking and automation

The 5164 provides robust programmability through a standards-based approach. It features model-driven management with YANG-based data modeling and supports various management interfaces, including NETCONF, Google remote procedure call (gRPC) / gRPC Network Management Interface (gNMI) streaming telemetry, and command line interface (CLI). For provisioning, it includes advanced transactionality capabilities to seamlessly handle complex, long configuration changes and script dependencies.

When paired with Ciena’s Navigator Network Control Suite™ (Navigator NCS), the 5164 delivers industry-leading multi-layer software-defined networking (SDN) capabilities for managing IP and optical layers across multiple domains and technologies.

The router also supports Ciena’s Node Essentials, which simplifies configuration through an intuitive GUI—replacing complex CLI scripts with a fast, form-based workflow that automatically handles all required bindings.

Security

Offering robust hardware and software security features, the secure boot of the 5164 ensures it only starts with untampered service-aware operating system (SAOS) software, while secure zero-touch provisioning (SZTP) guarantees secure device power-on and deployment from day one.

Sustainability

The 5164 is expertly designed for use in street cabinets and colocation facilities. Plus, the 5164 is environmentally friendly, meeting Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive standards. This not only makes the 5164 a responsible choice but also supports a longer network lifecycle, optimizing your resources for power, space, and design.
