Ciena India corporate social responsibility

How we’re giving back

At Ciena, we understand the power of connectivity. That’s why we’re dedicated to expanding access to connectivity and digital skills through our community impact program in India as part of our corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Through this program, we contribute funding to organizations across India that are working to bridge the digital divide in their communities.

Organizations and programs

This not-for-profit education society’s mission is to positively impact the underprivileged in India through educational initiatives and skill development programs.

Ciena Skilling and Awareness Program Career Development Center

This program provides digital literacy and employability courses to the youth from underserved communities. Courses include logistics, supply chain, basic IT, and personal development. Students also have access to certification, placement support, and post-placement counseling. As of 2024, Ciena is in its third year of funding this program.

Ciena Digital Empowerment Program through the DTV – Faridabad

Packed with a portable lab that includes 16 computers, the Faridabad-focused digital transformation vehicle (DTV) is celebrating its third year of transforming lives with courses like IT basics and digital and financial literacy. The vehicle leaves behind a Hole-in-the-Wall Learning Station in each village that makes sure residents have access to the tools they need to continue learning long after the vehicle departs.

Ciena Digital Empowerment Program through the DTV – Sonipat

Like its fellow Faridabad-focused vehicle, the Sonipat-focused DTV brought a portable lab equipped with 16 computers to five villages in Sonipat in 2024 and plans to visit 12 more villages in the coming years. Offering courses in IT basics and digital and financial literacy, the DTV installs Hole-in the-Wall Learning Stations before it leaves to ensure ongoing access to learning.

This organization works to optimize the potential of children, youth, and women by providing holistic education through schools, collaborations, and community programs.

DigiSkill

Offering instruction in coding and English skills, career guidance, and placement support, this program provides the digital literacy so critical for the employability of young people. Rounding out the program’s offerings are digital citizenship for women, cybersecurity training, Microsoft Office instruction, and online banking, among other skills.

By charitably helping underprivileged children develop with education and vocational training, this organization’s goal is to produce people who are not only self-reliant but also charitable themselves.

Digital Education and Training Program – Dundahera and New Kondli

This program supports the Information Technology Centres in Dundahera and New Kondli. The IT Centres provide professional training to underprivileged youth in IT applications, digital media, and other vocational courses.

Digital Education and Training Program – Telecom Centre

Supporting the Telecom Centre in Manesar, this program provides job-specific professional training, skills enhancement, and certification courses for aspiring telecom-industry professionals. What separates this program from others is its use of toolkits that provide students with practical experience

This not-for-profit foundation represents the Indian tech industry, supporting organizations with a vision of solving complex social and economic challenges through technology.

TechForChange – Cohort 3

Running in universities around the country, this program teaches design, engineering, and entrepreneurship to students while upskilling them in business and emerging technologies. Students apply these learnings practically to building a product or business, the top five of which receive INR 5 Lakh seed funding through technology business incubators (TBIs).

This organization’s mission is to provide quality education and employment opportunities in rural and semi-urban areas.

Digital Bridge

As the name suggests, this program is designed to bridge the gap between women in rural areas and financial independence. The program’s associated app connects women seeking support with donors and employers who can help them achieve their goals. Digital Bridge’s mission is supported by sessions hosted by female entrepreneurs who have previously found success with the program.

This foundation’s mission is to “create and support programs that bring about sustainable changes through education and use of technology.” The work is intended to improve the quality and accessibility of education at schools across rural India and provide the technology and opportunities to make youth more employable.

Advanced Technology Labs Program

Harnessing students’ enthusiasm for robotics and gaming, this program includes labs in two Satya Bharti Adarsh Senior Secondary Schools in Punjab. Students get hands-on experience developing analytics, solving problems, and making decisions while exercising creativity and teamwork.

Digital classrooms

Ciena provides educational technology and devices to support teaching sessions in these digital classrooms at 15 primary and elementary Satya Bharti schools in Punjab and Haryana.

Digital language labs

Students in digital language labs interactively learn enhanced listening, speaking, reading, writing, and IT skills in state-of-the-art labs established in Satya Bharti Senior Secondary Schools in Punjab.

This innovative learning organization was created to improve the quality of education in India.

Digital Skills Program

This multi-faceted program begins with building a learning portal for 15–25-year-olds. Upon the portal’s completion, the goal is to implement the program with 4,000 youth across seven Indian states in two languages.
